The Importance of Hydration.
Water is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and it's highly important to get the right amount of fluid. The human body needs water to survive, every organ and cell needs to stay hydrated in order for the body to function at its best. On average, 60% of the adult body consists of water. It's used as the base building material in cells and performs a number of other benefits within our bodies. Age, weight, and gender determine the amount of water you need to drink during the day; athletes may need to drink more water because they lose more fluids during physical activities
We take a closer look at why water is so important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Why do we need to drink water?
Water has a number of functions in the body, including regulating temperature, transporting nutrients and compounds in blood, removing waste products and acting as a lubricant and shock absorber in joints. To avoid dehydration you need to replace this water regularly.
The importance of hydration is essential not only for physical health, but also for mental health and performance. There is an extensive list of benefits to drinking plenty of water, we include some of the most discussed topics below.
- Increased Energy & Improved Productivity – Dehydration can cause fatigue and significantly reduce brain function and performance. If you feel that your cognitive skills aren’t at their usual level, it's probably time to grab your Stay Sixty® reusable water bottle!
- Improved Physical Performance – Physical activity causes your body to lose a lot of fluid. Staying hydrated before, during, and after exercise can make your workout feel easier. Water can keep your performance up while exercising and prevent fatigue after.
- Mood Booster – When your body is hydrated, it’s performing its best which helps put you in a good mood. If you notice yourself slipping into a negative mood, drinking water can actually help.
- Headache Prevention – Headaches are often due to dehydration and can be relieved by drinking water. It’s important to stay hydrated to avoid headaches and migraines, particularly if you are prone to getting them. That's why it's important to keep a good reusable water bottle with you through the day.
What happens when we get dehydrated?
If you're not consuming enough water, over time your body will become dehydrated. A number of studies have shown that at approximately 1% dehydration (equivalent of 1% of body weight water loss) there are negative effects on mental and physical function and these become more severe as dehydration gets worse. Symptoms of mild dehydration include a dry mouth, headaches and poor concentration.
How much water do you need to drink in a day?
The amount of water you need to consume throughout a day depends on many things including the weather, how much physical activity you do and your age. However, many studies suggests 6-8 glasses of water per day, the equivalent to 1-1.5 litres of water per day. If the weather is hot or you are exercising you may need to drink more water.
Can you drink too much water?
It is possible to drink too much water, although extremely rare, to drink so much water the body isn't able to get rid of the excess quickly enough and sodium levels in the blood become dangerously low. This can have a number of health consequences and is highly unlikely under normal conditions. However, this has happened in individuals following a very extreme form of detox programme.
